A Vampire Died Today

After wandering for years on this beaten earth
The vampire comes home
Looking past the white sheet face
That stares back at me, expectantly

The hollow features and his simplicity
Stare back in a confused state
He did not expect me
He does not want me

I’m staring past the darkened clothes
I’m seeing into the weary mind
The ways so hard he cannot leap
He’s at a loss, he can’t get me

He wants to understand
The reason why I’m here
He does not comprehend the ways
I have reached him here

He thinks I am an image
Sent from someone further up
Sent to tell him
That at last his time is up

But I’m not
Does he realize?
I have only to see the state he’s in
To know the risk I face

The battle took it out of him
The hopes he always had
The chance to be one of us
Stead of one of him

He’s a loner in a desert
No way to turn back
The world looks all the same
He’s past it now

He’s laughing to himself
Found the mistake he made
Yearns for fresh blood
But thinks on in dismay

He does not wish to be him
He would prefer to be me
He’s staring at the past he never had
He’s reached the dead end

He wants to move on
But he cannot run anymore
The ways have stopped to still him
He cannot face this day

He’s at his final strand
As he’s clinging to the cliff
This time he gives in
He steps out none the less

The final glimpse I caught
Was of light from up above
Taking pity on a stranger
Letting him up with love

I thought our ways were set
Till I saw the vampire die
And when he went to heaven
I let out half a cry

For he was the greatest man
That ever lived today
He’s forgiven all his demons
And he faces one more day

The words he didn’t utter
Echo in my mind
The fact he didn’t stutter
And the way he wasn’t kind

But even though he was bad
At last he changed his ways
Gone to death for ever
Stead of living many days

Eternities he reached through
Could never find the present
He even let out a small smile
In fact he was quite pleasant

I suppose I am bewildered
I don’t know what to say
Other that the obvious
I saw a vampire die today
