Sniper

by Tom Watkins   Mar 22, 2005

I am a shadow on the rooftop,
I blend into the backdrop.

I am sent across the borders
With my rifle and my orders.

At the Company’s insistence,
I drop my mark from a distance.

Then I return to my cover,
And hope my wife does not discover.

The secret life her husband leads,
She’d never understand his deeds.

But I’m not looking for salvation,
I do my job for this Nation.

Though I find in it no delight,
I chose to take up this fight,

To insure the safety of this land,
I hope God will understand.

That it is something I must do
To keep the world safe for you.

And so new orders now arrive,
Pray I make it home alive.

But in case this time I should die,
I will say one more good-bye.
