Hearts Drawn

by Lisa D Larson   Mar 30, 2005

You could hear the breeze, moving through the trees
As she was sitting there, Rocking in her chair
She said she had a story to tell, so we better listen well
It was about her life before she became my dad’s wife
A tear started to fall as she said I will tell you all
It was many years ago and I have nothing to show
She grew silent as we thought about what she meant
She started on the dark night that they had a fight
They had yelled and screamed over all they dreamed
He said his love was a lie as he told her goodbye
He ran out in the storm as the clouds started to form
She asked him to come back, her love he did not lack
She tried to follow him but the light was very dim
The tears then fell like rain as she started to feel the pain
The lightning flashed and his body had been smashed
The building was old that turned his body so cold
She found him alone lying there in the stone
Before he was gone a heart he had drawn
And she knew inside that he was not trying to hide
The love he felt where she now knelt
She cleared her throat, buttoned up her coat
She moved really slow, as she got up to go
With her story told, we turned to each other to hold
We know knew how this story was true
From all the hearts in the sand drawn with her hand
When we were just so small and had suffered a fall
She said she’d explain when her tears she could refrain
Of hearts drawn in the blood of the dawn.
