When Goodbye Comes

I come home and you run to me.
Your face filled with a love I can see.
A smile in my heart I can't hide.
Oh the joy I feel deep inside.

I try not to think about the future.
When leaving home will be a torture.
I'll go on to those greener pastures
Yet never forget these last years.

I hold back the sadness and the tears.
Don't let you know about all of my fears.
My heart will hurt and it might die.
The day I have to tell you goodbye.

I held you a little tighter today
Cause soon I'll be going away.
I'm so happy, yet I'm so very sad.
Never realized the joy that I had.

The grass always seems greener on the other side.
So long to get there oh how I tried.
Yet happiness was here with me all along.
At the end of each night and at the break of each dawn.

We can write and we can visit
But is it something I can live with?
Waking up without being home
Having to start somewhere new all alone.

I know though that it's best for me.
A whole big world out there to see.
Opportunity saw fit to knock on my door.
Yet part of me wishes things were like they were before.

I don't know how to say goodbye.
Don't know if I have the strength to try.
It's hard to let go of the special friends
Yet everything that begins must end.

The time that we have left I'll hold close
Cause memories are what I'll cherish the most.
The day will come for the tears and the last sigh.
