Only A Heartbeat Away

She's such a vision
my breath is caught.
Succumbing to cancer
her battle is lost.

Holding her hand...
wishing her peace.
Slipping away...
she's fast asleep.

With a prayer on my lips,
a kiss goodbye.
Turning away,
so she won't see me cry.

I tried to be strong
it was her request.
No sorrow or tears
it's all for the best.

"Don't be sad"
she'd say time and again.
"Just take care of each other,
it's not the end".

"I'll always be here,
forever to stay.
Caught inside,
only a heartbeat away".

This of course is written for my mom's best friend Angie! She was fighting cancer and lost the battle on March 10, 2005! She was in a coma like state for a week before she passed, just so you can further understand the 3rd stanza of this poem. I want to thank everyone for their concern and constant prayers! I appreciate it more than you'll ever know!
