Two flames

by Patrick Mcdaniel   Apr 13, 2005

One green candle,
Sits beside my bed.
Two burning flames,
Flicker in my head.
Thoughts of tomorrow
Lie only for the dead.
For the day to live is today,
You may never hear what in tomorrow is said.
But as I watch the flames burn,
As I watch their beauty turn,
I slowly but soon learn, that
For every second we must yearn,
We must want, and need to be the brightest,
Hottest flame we can be, to be flame is beauty, to be flame,
To burn insane, to take the pain,
To even burn in the rain,
To want it and need it.

But as I watched the two flames stand,
The two became one, the heart of man, the heart of all, the sight of hand, I slowly understand.
That what matters most is not how long we burn, but what we burn for, and that we burn as big as we can.
And if we burn this way,
Till out last day,
And if we burn as long as we can

Then when they try to blow us out,

We will still stand.
