Fade away

by Mel   Apr 13, 2005

Unlike yesterday
there's nothing here for you today.
Like the fruit we bought that's on the top of my fridge, now rotting, you might as well just fade away.Go.

Today is different.
You're different.
And I know, should I pick up the phone, that your voice will lack color and texture; in turn it will wash the tone out of mine and silences will begin to define
what once was you and me.

So I won't even bother sending out a text, either. I don't want to feel that long empty pause between send and receive where a minute becomes an hour and a day feels like a week.

You see, I'm gaining strength at your expense as you sit and compile the rules of engagement; the battle plan -
I'm beginning to move on, as it were, away from you by the day
and there's no way you know it yet.

You think I'm here for the duration and at your call.
This is your downfall.
Today is different.
My soul is packing things away
that have your name etched on it:
my heart sensing the move, is doing the same.
This is a sorry end
to what you regarded as a game.

How amazing. Synchronized. you text ME as I write.
Let's see how long the day feels, my love.....

I really like your work, but unfortunately there are too many out there that don't understand the beauty of a non-rhyming poem so rich with words that it seems to flow perfectly anyway...Yes, I think this one will be pinned to my cork board...I have only ever tried one non-rhyming poem, titled 'death laughs at me' which I would love you to read, but you have inspired me to write more. Tnankyou.
