Cement

by Timothy   May 7, 2005

We have been apart for so many years,
Separately we raised new families, survived a million new tears;
But when I see you with your new position within these office walls,
Memories of us wash over me like some great, watery falls.

You are more beautiful as a middle-aged woman than ere I remember you as young,
I can not find a line to speak, nothing rolls off my tongue;
So, day after day, I see you smile your meek grin,
And I watch you work your day wishing so badly to ask you: "How have you been?".

I know you were divorced last year,
In a small town, there's no gossip you don't hear;
Your kids have moved away, and now you live alone,
I have likewise pain that I have known.

Then one day as we were waiting for the elevator I got a start,
You finally spoke to me, and it raced the beat of my heart;
I believed for the first time that we might be able to cement over the past,
And secure in that binding a rekindled relationship that will forever last.
