Mother's Day - Polite Opposition

by No Motiv?   May 8, 2005

He's holding her hand,
The child of her own;

Two generations later,
He carries her eyes.

A small boy of seven,
His knowledge so frail,

He looks to her for answers,
And no doubt, he finds them.

"Grammy, today I heard,
There wasn't a God..."

"This boy in my class
told me so."

He let her hand fall as his
chin rose to ponder,

The thought that God
may not exist;

"I asked my teacher,
but she wouldn't say..."

But before he could
enlighten her, her voice,

unfaltered [perhaps prepared],
erased his away.

"Child, so sweet,
to you I would never lie...."

Emerald green life
danced from her eyes.

She took his hand,
And squeezed it tight,

"Through your mother,
I gave you your life....

God is the love that
enables me to do so...

He is the womb in my tummy
And heart in my chest,

The breath in your lungs
And mind in your head."

The boy, unsatisfied,
asked what she meant

And with this,
His grandmother said:

"God is the life and the soul
in my heart:

My ability to learn and love.
You, my child,

Are a piece of me,
And a little portion of God."

The child nodded,
As if he understood...

"Grammy, I know there must
be a God!"

She felt delighted to explain
something so great...

But from her words,
He gained nothing at all...

"Look at my eyes!
They're green, too!

This must be a gift
from God!"

Her eyes filled with tears,
but she nodded them away;

And she thought about
what she just heard

Before she replied,
she prayed to the sky,

And thanked God
for her grandson's gift.

Your words were flawless. The stanza setting was perfect... definetely uniquely made with brilliant rhymes.
The story was adorable, especially the green eyes... I can see green eyes.
