A Little Boy's Best Friend

Hurrying home from school,
Being clumsy and a klutz,
I trip on the sidewalk again,
This time only a small bruise no cuts.

I dash upstairs to mend my ouchie,
Frantically looking for a band-aid,
Winnie the Pooh will do,
All of a sudden I feel afraid.

Where is my best friend,
"Max, where are you?"
He wasn't in my room.
"Max, where are you?"

I went to check the doghouse,
Nothing but an empty plate,
"Max, where are you?"
I guess he just ate.

I ran to the basement,
All I see is his teddy bear,
"Max, where are you?"
Dogs don't just vanish into thin air.

I check his favorite spot,
All I see is his sweater,
"Max, where are you?"
Then I notice on the fridge a letter...

"Sorry sweetie, Max is gone,"
"I didn't know how to break you the news,"
"Max was very sick"
"I know he's someone you did not want to lose"

"He is in a happy place now,"
"They had to put him to sleep,"
"I'm so sorry baby,"
All I could do was weep.

I went down on two knees,
Collapsed onto the kitchen floor,
As tears flowed from my eyes,
There was a knock on the door.

I hear the barking of another dog,
I want my Max back
I run upstairs to my room,
I can't breathe because of an asthma attack.

I huff and puff deeply,
As I sat on my bed and prayed,
God please give me my dog back,
I know I'm only a boy in the 3rd grade.

With a silence in the room,
Countless hours passing by,
His family finds his motionless body,
Why did a dog's best friend have to die.
