Come O Spirit

by samuel   May 20, 2005

It was his confirmation day,
The priest was fervent,
Hands on his head praying
For the spirit to
Fill this little lad,
Make him a perfect Christian
And heavenly soldier;
He prayed and prayed and prayed,
Beads of perspiration
Wrapped his face as he
Closed his eyes trying to be the first
To see God,
To recommend this child to him,
To ask for a million favours
On his behalf;
The lad knelt and
Allowed himself to be the
Cause of so much trouble,
Everyone felt he needed
The spirit
To make him strong
And mature a Christian,
To preach the word
And to win countless souls
Unto the Lord.
And he strained to listen to the words
That supplicated the lord;
Come Holy Spirit.
The spirit of change,
that powerful fire to burn away
The desire to see her again,
No - to see them again;
The spirit to squelch the desire
To peel off their skirts
And find what was hidden beneath,
To kiss and to suck,
To poke and to release
The persistent waxy fluid
The spirit -
Come O Holy Spirit;
Mary, Lucia, Agatha
No - the Spirit;
Where are you, Spirit
When my mind sees all
These pictures,
All the slides of the
Pleasurable pain of yesterday;
The priest is praying fervently,
the congregation is chanting
Frenzied Amens to the bargain,
All chant the Come O Spirit,
But somewhere in the corner
The devil reminds me
That I am one ugly
Heck of a polluted pile
Of x-rated memories
Clogging my brain,
Making me ask if the spirit
Will come down at all.
But he goes on praying
Just the same
As the minutes travel all the
Way from one to twelve.
