It Was Me All Along

by Ashley Redden   May 23, 2005

Sitting on the porch
On the old wooden swing
Where we spent alot of evenings together
One night you brought the subject up
You said you was leaving
But I never really figured you would
Till one day I came home
Found the closet empty
And a note on the dresser
That said my love just wasn't enough
And theres something missing
You took about everything I had
I went to the fridge
Figured Id get to drinking you away for tonight
I guess you knew it was what Id turn to
Cause I found another note sticking on the door
Said that you needed to find yourself
There was a place inside that wasn't filled
I knew something had to be changed
So she'd come on back
I knew she didn't like me drinking
So thats the first thing I did
I poured every bottle of whiskey out
It had always been there for me
But I'm putting it down tonight
I shaved that old beard off
The one she got after me to get rid of
Got my hair all trimmed up
But not the outside was all that mattered
I knew I had to be a better lover
So the next day I sent her flowers
Just to show her how much I really care
I swallowed my pride
Didn't care what my buddies thought
She was the best damn thing to happen to me
And I wasn't about to let her go
A few days went by
I was showing up for work on time
Making myself a person worthwhile
Called her this evening
Asked her to forgive me
And asked her for a second time
I about lost her to my foolishness
Its all changed now
She'll never have to tell me twice
That she ever needs to find herself
When it was me all along
