I’m not your father, although you seem to think I am
Nor your Brother, Mother, Sister or any of them.
But what I am is someone that loves you from way back when.
Sure you let me bask in your glow
And accompany you wherever you go
But I’m like the comforter, the broken in shoes
The one that you count on and often abuse
I’m your confessor and partner the one you count on
But on too many occasions I’m left all alone.
You include me exclude me on any old whim
And all that I want is for you to open your heart and let me come in.
I’m sad and I’m happy on a wide range of things
But won’t you just look, see what I am giving
Here is my heart, it contains all of my love
My emotions and feelings all that I have
Its not that I’m needy because I only need you
I need to be with you and I need your love too
Love me and see me answer me true
Am I unnecessary, should I move on?
Have I done something terribly wrong?
I love you, and in that there’s no doubt
But don’t try to appease me by keeping me about
Because I’m a habit you can’t do without.
