Wolf of the Night

***This is also a true story. It happened to me a few years ago, maybe 6. I dunno. But I remember it so vividly, I decided to write about it...especially since it scared the s*** out of me.***

One day I took a walk in the woods
I just wanted to be alone
But when I deep into the trees
It was as silent as life's bone.
Stilled my limbs and saw the shadow
I dared not reply
The whisper to my nerves chilled me
And I dared not ask why.
I felt the eyes stare at my body
Watching behind my back
I just stood there still as time
Waiting for it to attack.
So slowly I turn around to see
What the future was to behold...
In the solitude of the forest
An ounce of courage made bold.
Beyond lay two old felled trees
Rotting bark and grass
In the ensuing sunset I saw
A black and furry mass.
Behind the logs it crouched down low
Watching me with yellow eyes
My heart stiffened for just a beat
Then sporadically sang with my whimpering cries.
I stopped, I didn't know what to do...
...A giant wolf just growling deep.
Hidden behind and ready to pounce
I knew that I would enter death's sleep.
So closed my eyes for just a second
And then I opened them to see
The wolf was gone...without a trace
But then, how could this be?
So run I did...on home to bed...
...No more silence in the wood
No more dangerous wolves to eat me
No...that would not be good.

Now I look back to that one time
I knew what I saw was true.
But still I can't help if it meant to kill?
Or just to help me through.
