If you can be

by don mohr   Jun 17, 2005

I wanted, she said, for the sun to
rise upon our shoulders-
I lifted my heavy burdens and
tossed them into the sea, not
forgetting anything-
She wasted neither time nor place
to make us a home, and nothing
lay idle nor did we slay-
Weathers torments tried us to be
best and true-
The words left her throat so
profound yet so blue-
"If you can be with anyone your
heart desires-would you still be
holding me now as my life
expires?"-
I stand upon the shoulder of a
strong rock, against a tall tree,
where I buried my love for her
and set myself free.
