Stay Gold

by codey   Jun 18, 2005

Friends forever we say,
as on this grassy hilltop we lay,
we watch as the mist breaks off, and floats away,
"its beautiful, all silver and gold" i reply by saying "nothing gold can stay"
while remembering a poem i once read,
"natures first green is gold,
her hardest hue to hold,
her early leafs a flower,
but only so an hour.
then leaf subsides to leaf.
so eden sank to grief,
so dawn goes down today.
nothing gold can stay."
we started walking home later that day,
but i now know that you wouldn't stay,
that car hit you, to hospital you went,
i followed you to the hospital and to the emergency room u went,
i was waiting, and the doctor told me the bad news
"her back has been broken, shes fighting in a battle she most certainly will loose"
i came in the room, as you just lay there,
i thought " I'm too late, shes already dead, how much can i bare?"
you whisper my name i barely even hear you,
i come closer to you,
i grasp your cold hand, while brushing your hair from your face,
"I'm here now, nothing can move me from this place"
my heart drops, theres a lump in my throat,
remembering that it was just this morning we were watching the mist float,
a tear runs down my cheek from the thought of never seeing you again,
my hearts aching now from all of this pain.
somethings about to happen, i can feel the room getting cold,
you say just before you die "stay gold... please stay gold..."

oh...have you ever read the book "The Outsiders?" or seen the movie- the book is ten times better. its by S.E. Hinton- she writes other great books too, like "THat was Then, This is Now" ...anyway, i loved the poem, it was filled with a lot of emotion and the ending reminded me so much of that in "The Outsiders"...great job!!!
