Sarah's Smile

by MelindaJoy   Jun 21, 2005

Standing on the bridge overlooking the falls

Sweatshirt hood up to hide from the rain

Headphones on, music loud

Listening to the screamings of Kurt Cobain

Rocking her body rhythmically

As she tries to soothe and calm

Her four-month-old little daughter

That’s falling asleep in her arms

Being a teenage mother

At times is too much endure

And looking over the railing

She is certain she’s found her cure

To stop the sleepless nights

And ease her feelings of disgrace

She decides what she must do

As the color disappears from her face

One leg over the railing

She thinks back to that summer night

When her life took the turn for the worse

Away from the future that once looked so bright

Dressed up for the senior prom

What should have been a joyous occasion

Waking up bleeding in the town park

Covered by bruises, cuts and abrasions

Seems her quarterback boyfriend wanted

More than she was willing to provide

He raped her and savagely beat her

And left her alone to die

But no one believed her story

Of the star quarterback’s abuse

Her parents even doubted her

Since she always had a lie or excuse

Her second leg over the railing now

She looks down from her spot on the ledge

Looking down into the darkness

Contemplating two lives on the edge

She takes one last loving look

At the daughter that she adores

And wipes away her tears

She wanted to give her so much more

She smiles at her little girl

And enjoys one last hug and kiss

And she slowly leans herself forward

Disappearing into the fall’s mist

Her eyes wincing from the brightness

Of the sun piercing through the blinds

As she awakes from the bad dream

That’s been etched into her mind

Fearful that she might have acted

On the feelings she hides inside

She runs to the hand me down crib

And is greeted by Sarah’s smile

She vows this is the day

That she finally seeks some counseling

To free her body and her soul

Of the feelings that she’s harboring

Fast-forward 18 years later

Maggie sits on the football bleachers

Watching her daughter graduate

Being honored by all of her teachers

After the ceremony Sarah runs to her mother

For a hug and some photo poses

She tells her mom that she loves her

And presents her with one dozen roses

Sarah runs off with her friends

As Maggie begins to cry

Knowing they almost didn’t make it

She wipes the tears from her eyes

And she thinks back to the day

Standing suicidal and scared on the ledge

But now she is a respected youth counselor

Helping other young moms on the edge

She remembers the exact moment

That she decided her life was worthwhile

Standing on the edge of her existence

And seeing her baby Sarah’s smile

1000 out of 5 from me.....
Did that happen to anybody you knew? Or did you put those words together out of imagination?
Either way, everything went perfectly and it was a breathtaking poem.

I like it, its very well contructed and I have used the same rhythm and rhyme scheme many times...I'm also very relieved that you ended it with a happy ending rather than death or darkness, because I believe everyone's life has a meaning and everyone has dreams that should be fulfilled. thank you for ending it happy :-)
