At the Fork in the Road

by Peter Williams   Jun 29, 2005

The road stops...
It is split in twain.
There are two paths,
One path leading to my left,
The other to my right.
The path to my right,
It leads straight,
It's simple,
It's easy.
I can see exactly where it leads,
It's clear,
It's safe.
Everyone takes this path,
It's the quickest path to their destination.
It's quick,
It's simple,
It's easy,
It's clear,
It's safe.
The easiest, safest, and quickest route.
The path to my left...
Is full of peril.
The path is curvy,
Leading trough a haunted wood,
A dangerous swamp,
A dry desert,
And a vast mountain range.
I don't know where the path leads.
It's long and it will take all of one's life to reach the end.
It's the longest, hardest, most dangerous route.
No one would take this path,
Who in the right mind would?
There is no guarantee that you will make it through,
There is no guarantee that one will be rewarded,
There is no guarantee that you will survive it,
There is no guarantee...
I turn to my right.
As I take a step forward,
Something inside me changes,
Fear and doubt...
All of it fades away.
I've been down this path before,
The path that lays before me.
It's easiest, safest, and quickest route.
... But also...
If a path is full of peril then surely the end is more rewarding,
Of course there is no guarantee.
... But this path that lays before me,
I have been down it before,
I know exactly where it leads,
I know exactly what happens at the end.
The path to my left...
I've never been down it before,
No one has.
There is no guarantee that I will make it through,
There is no guarantee that I will be rewarded,
There is no guarantee that I will survive,
There is no guarantee...
I take a step back....
I turn to my left,
Then my right...
And finally my left.
There is no guarantee...
I take a step forward and continue on this long path,
This path of peril,
This path of danger,
This path of time,
This path of choice,
This path of virtue,
This path of courage,
This path of love,
This path of life.
I continue along this path,
Never looking back,
Never regretting,
And always I will remember...
The choice that I made at the fork in the road.
