The Midst Of The Embers

by Jaime   Jul 4, 2005

I saw a woman escorted from a burning house a while ago
No signs of emotion was she able to let show
She was the only survivor, she lost her children five
Not a single one of them would ever be found alive

When she was pregnant with her first, her mother had passed away
Her mother died while struggling to hold on another day
All her mother had wanted was to see her grandchild born
The woman was there when her mother died; she admitted her heart was torn

The last thing her mother said was to tell every child she had to be good
So someday they would be in heaven, and finally see them she could
Life then went on as usual, or as usual as it could be
Until the day of the fire, where the woman sat outside her house, calmly.

I asked her how she handled it, how she let no one see her cry
I had to hold back tears as she explained to me why
In the midst of the embers she had seen her mothers smiling face
That's how she knew her children were in a better place
