Beyond reach

by Sarah   Jul 8, 2005

My stumbling steps forward, suitcase in hand.
I blink back the tears, each step forward taking me out of your reach.
Thoughts of you running through my head, of memories we shared.
I reach the door, placing the suitcase on the ground.
I take one look back, wanting only to see what I know is not there.
Your image has faded beyond sight, yet still clear in mind.
Closing my eyes, I place my hand on the door and push.
My nerves are shot, and I tremble.
I step out onto the curve, and then I hear it.
Behind me… My name… From your lips.
I turn, dropping my suitcase…

Bang….

I now lay on the ground, cradled in your arms.
The whispered words of love are still heard, even as the pain fades.
And as the last seconds of my life go by, my only thoughts are of you.
Even as you hold me tight, I let go.
And once again, I am beyond reach.
