Finally

by Kelly Katherine   Jul 26, 2005

They were young
Each other’s first
Fresh and naive.

But the world knew better
War pulled them apart
He was forced to leave.

Decades flew
Vows were made
Children were conceived.

Careers were secured
Grand babies born
Goals were achieved.

But not one day passed
In their separate lives
That they both didn't believe.

He was no longer young
When his wife slipped away
He struggled to live as he grieved.

And when he knew he was ready
He wrote her the letter
That the war never let her receive.

He told she was always the one.
He told her he couldn't go on.

He asked if once more
She could let him hold her hand
And grant him this one reprieve.

Soon she was again by his side
She had waited so long
For him to heal from bereave.

Their hearts were still young
Each other's last
Content … no longer naive.
