Painful Embroidery

by Renee   Aug 28, 2005

It read delicately, "To A Dear Angel"
every stitch had a glitch and the letters were strangled
The words weren't centered, loose strings never fixed
the sweater itself didn't even fit.

It reeked of hospital, of loneliness and death.
The material used was scratched and a wreck.
It has to be dry-cleaned every now and again
there's a hole in the shoulder that I could never mend.

It was made so long ago, when I was only a child
When she would call me angel, and I would run wild
Not once did I think of the pain it would bring
the next time I gripped it tight and heard her sing.

It was sent many years after it was made.
The color had faded and edges were frayed.
Each string filled with love, it sings its song.
"Don't mourn me when I'm gone,
for in this painful embroidery I will live on."

-*- My mom's grandmother died a few days ago, they were extremely close. It's hard for me to express my sympathy for her, so I wrote this poem.-*-

Wow...the emotion placed here is powerful, Coonay. For some strange reason this stanza stands out from the rest, in my opinion:

"It read delicately, "To A Dear Angel"
every stitch had a glitch and the letters were strangled
The words weren't centered, loose strings never fixed
the sweater itself didn't even fit."

Those lines were hella awesome! :) I especially liked the line saying "The letters were strangled". That gave me a weird sort of image in my head.

I once read a quote saying something to the effect of "Gratitude will always conquer loss." That's one of my favorite quotes because it's so true. Your mom will have her time for grief but soon enough she'll start to remember what a great grandmother she had, and she'll heal...slowly.

*I'm trying to read more of the Cooids' poems, so you're the first one today. Lucky you. :P

    Take care...

Awwwwwwwww. This is so sad :-(. You can feel the pain in this...great job hun. This means a lot to me, as I lost my grandmother almost two years ago now, and I often go to her house to visit my grandfather and it's just not the same without her there. And I was given the necklace she always wore...Anyway, this is brilliant, try to keep your head up, and I hope you and your mom will be okay. She's in a better place, remember that. E> xoxo love you muches, take care.

    Love always,
