A distant love

Once upon a grand old time
there was a girl in a happy rhyme
she had a boyfriend with a heart of gold
but he joined the marines, his life was sold

they had three months to be together
they decided to be very clever
they spent there time in happy days
playing jokes, keeping there silly ways

there time neared on a starry July night
he gave her an address so she could write
he gave her a kiss and a hug very tight
before he boarded his plane for flight

she wanted to yell "please don't go"
but she stayed silent as her heart screamed "no"
when she got home she let the tears roll down
and in her heart only pain was found

he was a man with no walk in the park
left with out family, alone in the dark
there was no fun, all work and stress
but he thought of her with each lingering breath

she waited for him, she wrote for days
caught in daydreams of there silly ways
these happy thoughts brought tears to her eyes
while writing her happy letters she always cried

trying to keep things as happy as can be
so he wouldn't worry, it was only the good he'd see
he did the same with the hour he had
it's amazing that this boy never went mad

when he got back on ten day leave
she couldn't stop smiling till he had to leave
time passed to fast, they'd say when he'd go
but, he'd come back for Christmas like he promised her so
