Love and War

by k i k i   Oct 7, 2005

Battlefields filled with thousands,
Of innocent men ready to win.
Young, and young at heart,
Put their hands up to shoot.
Will they ever fly back home,
To see their families grow?

Wives feeding the children,
Trying to keep a brave face for them.
Asking questions to kiss their daddy,
She has to cover up for him.
Crying for another chance to say
I love you, until it's too late.

Dedication and loyalty,
Marching into the lines of fire.
Guns ready for a sudden attack,
But can't stop thinking of home.
Crowded in the camps,
They long for a home cooked meal.

Slaving at the kitchen stove,
Cooking for the family.
Leftovers frozen, that would have been his,
But she knows they will be together again.
He came back before,
What would be different this time?

Writing a letter to his children,
A keepsake of the one they didn't know.
Scared that he won't see them marry,
And share a family like he didn't get to.
A last note of his love,
Lost in a pack of men fighting to win.

Two weeks after the end,
He hasn't arrived home.
Nothing in the mail,
She doesn't know what to do.
Waiting at the phone,
A call comes through.

' I'm so sorry but he died knowing,
That his family would still carry on.
His final words have been sent to you,
Through express mail.
Our deepest sympathies,
A legend, always remembered '

Waiting at the windows ledge,
It's been months now.
Daddy's on holiday she tells them,
But Mummy doesn't know when he will return.
Bed empty, she knows the truth,
And hates the fact the children don't.

No father figure to carry them through,
They never knew what happened.

That was another really good one. Usually I favour the rhyming poems, but you seem to have so much feeling and emotion in them that I like them all the same. This one is by far my favourite. It's really sad, but this has happened with so many families... Keep up the good work, I'd like to see more from you.
