Last

by Hilary   Oct 29, 2005

I was waiting at home
When you arrived.
I tried to keep the smile on my face -
Not wanting our last day
To be full of our pain.
I watched you prepare -
Your BDUs were packed
In a bag that could
Carry me inside for you
To bring along -
My promises were stuck
In the pocket close
To your heart -
In hopes it will help
To get you through.
I tried to memorize
Every inch of you
To keep me going
While youre gone.
My heart cried out silently -
Knowing I cant let you see my fear.
The day quickly passed
As I held on to my last night
In your arms -
For when morning came
I melted into one last kiss -
I waved goodbye
Preparing to face months and months
Of a Marines girlfriends
Hardest job -
Letting the man I love
Go off to fight
For the ones
He will never meet.
