Paper Heart

by Daniel Alexander   Nov 4, 2005

Your paper heart is cupped in my hand
Torn apart like a work of bad art
By the bullets from a gun of longing
To be the lover that you wish I was
You've said "This is a war"
But it's fought with cutting words
-----------------------------
Going cold like my frozen heart
That allowed me to rip yours apart
Open palmed, I drop it to the floor
Whisked away, you can't use it anymore
The paper grows wet in a stream
That used to keep our lover's dream
Living and breathing in the cold
Where you can see breaths unfold
And the snow glitters as I mourn
This loveless lover's heart is torn
-------------------------------
A phoenix rises from it's ashes
I hope you'll do the same
Don't mistake my thoughts and meanings
Not everyone has my shame
I hold a weight that slowly kills me
Just shrug it away
I couldn't love you, but someone else can
That is all I can say
