I See

by Megan Scaggs   Nov 5, 2005

I see foul weather on the horizon;
Crops will fail and famine will enshroud us.
I see pestilence infecting the world,
Threatening to end the time allowed us.

I see wars beginning to escalate,
And I see greed fanning the flames of hate.
I see the madness of terrorism,
As innocents meet a violent fate.

I see the Earth labored in her groaning,
As the human virus begins to spread.
I see forests leveled and seas tainted,
Leaving all life within its boundaries dead.

I see life lived only in the moment,
With no regard given to consequence.
I see prejudice passing her judgment,
Without considering the evidence.

I see the threat of darkness looming near,
Unnoticed by those who have lost their sight.
But for all my searching I cannot see
What has become of humanity’s light.

Has love been lost to the eddies of hate;
Pulled below the surface by our contempt?
Is darkness all we have left in our hearts?
Was the human race so easy to tempt?

Yet I am not concerned with what I see,
I do not lament the view before me.
My heart aches for roads we have not taken,
And my eyes weep for what they do not see.
