Box.

by brin macnamara   Nov 5, 2005

I found a cardboard box this morning
Quite an unassuming box really,
not too big. six inches by four inches
Grey in colour.
After opening my shirt I grappled with my heart.
Pulling it out, I put it securely into that box.

Shedding a tear for this friend that has caused
me in unequal measure, both joy and unmentionable pain,
I said goodbye and replaced the lid.

Then creeping furtively out of the house at midnight
I buried it deep beneath our garden shed.
Goodbye troublesome friend.

Shades of the telltale heart - I think this one will keep beating as well, under the garden shed. It takes a lot of use to get tired of both the ecstasy and the agony. Its nice to have some respite, but don't forget where it's buried -you'll need it soon enough.
