I went back,
Back very far,
Back to when something horrible happened.
I watched a man trudge by,
Dragging a giant cross,
A crowd around him,
With many soldiers beating and whipping him.
He had to carry that cross so far.
All the way to the top of a hill.
He had been beaten so much,
That all you could see on his body,
Was crimson blood.
Finally, after what seemed like eternity,
He got to the top of the hill.
The cross was put in the ground,
With him nailed onto it.
A sign mocking him was hung above his head,
Many people around him had hatred in their eyes.
Some were yelling crude remarks at him.
Yet, all he did was hang his head down.
Then he looked up, and I caught his eye.
I saw so much in those deep, dark brown eyes.
I saw fear,
I saw pain,
I saw weakness,
Yet I saw sympathy,
And most of all,
I saw love.
He then looked up to the darkening sky,
And quietly said something toward the clouds.
Then, his head dropped back down,
No more life left in him.
I wondered why I saw what I saw in his eyes.
Why was there love,
When he was going through such a horrible death?
He made me wonder,
His eyes made me wonder.
He had fear,
He was scared of what would happen.
He was in pain,
Because of all the beatings he had gotten,
And because the people he loved,
Were mocking him and yelling at him.
I can only imagine how much that would've hurt.
He felt weak,
He didn't have much strength left.
He could barely even drag,
Himself up that hill.
He had sympathy,
Sympathy toward all the people,
The ones who hated him.
He had love,
Even though so many people had hurt him,
He loved them anyway.
I saw one other thing in his eyes,
I saw rejection.
God was looking down on him,
Having to reject his own son,
Because of all the sin he bore.
I came back from that horrible memory,
And I was humbled.
I then remembered,
He died for us,
He died for me, for you.
So we could always be forgiven.
We don't deserve this life,
The great lives we have been given.
I now see that,
I am worth nothing compared to God.
And I will always know this by,
Always remembering what I saw,
What I saw in Jesus' eyes.
