The Fire Mission

The Fire Mission

This was how his story began.
War is hell in Vietnam.
Many were just boys
now each ones a man.

Their faces twisted
with anger, not fear.
The time of the mission,
was drawing near.

Confidence and bravery
were in their voices.
Knowing victory or death
were their only choices.

Just as the front lines
were ready to bust.
The word came down,
Battery Adjust!

Through the still of the dawn,
on that cold and dreary day,
The only sound was the breech lock
of a charge seven round shot away.

The tension steadily mounted,
soon Charlie would know.
Eight seconds to splash,
then all hell was gonna blow.

When the last of the rounds
were charged and seated
The F.O reported:
The V.C's been defeated!

The next thing we heard
was this order called in.
Lets go home boys,
March Order Begin!
