Give Up Breathing

by Krete   Nov 16, 2005

What I thought,
was a dream,
is in fact,
this very scene.

I want to forget,
to ignore it all.
Remember nothing,
and never bawl.

But this highway,
the one of life,
isn't that easy,
inerrant of strife.

So I sit laughing,
gazing eyes to eyes.
Wishing and waiting,
hearing no cries.

And as sudden as that,
the trumpets explode,
sounds of dissonance,
gloat and implode.

As I lay in rubble,
amongst the tears & cries,
I see, & I hear,
the death, & the Whys.

How did I ever go,
Without one even check,
Wine, Food, & Laughs,
all in one flash wrecked.

How did I go from laughter,
slowly dimming away,
To silence so heavy,
that I forgot the way.

So as I lay here fading,
my colors running dry,
while giving up breathing,
I close my eyes and die.

The opening of this poem just screams the promise of something poetic.
and i loved how you began with the notion of a dream, which brings to mind color and beauty, and then it ends with the note of somehing grey and colorless. it was a wonderful contrast

This reminds me so much of that movie Donnie Darko. If you havent seen it, i dont want to spoil the ending for you, but there's a part in the movie when he just lays down smiling knowing he'll die.
Beautiful as always my dear... you never cease to make me smile.
