Treasure of a Friend

by Fall X Child   Nov 17, 2005

Open up this treasure chest,
Let the memories unfold.
All that's left of what we used to have,
All the stories waiting to be told.

Here are all the party favors,
From when we were little kids.
Doing our hair & staying up late,
I'll never forget all this.

There are some crumpled pieces of paper,
Turns out that they're all our old notes.
I still have the bracelet you made me,
I wore it until it broke.

That birthday card you made me,
Is so funny it should be a crime.
The corners are starting to tear & fray,
From being read so many times.

I have boxes & boxes of notes,
We used to write them in every class.
We couldn't wait till the bell rang,
So many stories we would pass.

Drawing is what we were known for,
It was what we used to do.
You drew a million pictures for me,
And I drew a million for you.

I remember all the times,
That we laughed so hard we cried.
And like so many summer nights,
Our friendship came & died.

You show me all the pictures,
Of things I don't want to see.
They are pictures of all your new friends,
And I'd give anything to replace them with me.

Are you sharing your secrets with someone else?
Are you drawing for them too?
Did you make them a special bracelet?
Have you moved on to someone new?

Have you given someone your trust?
Are they sharing your pain & tears?
Will they be there for you when your heart is broken?
Will they try to calm your fears?

We went from being the best of friends,
To a casual smile in the hall.
We talked for countless hours,
Now we barely speak at all.

I close this treasure chest now,
One lone tear falls inside.
It represents the day we first met,
To the day our friendship died.

I want you to know that I'll never forget you,
I've got the photo albums on the rack.
I miss how things used to be,
And I'd give anything to go back.
