The Beauty Behind the Beast

I'm walking down the street,
holding a baby in my arms,
softly whispering a lullaby,
one of my many charms.

I see a woman look from me,
to the baby in my grasp,
quickly rolling her eyes,
as she lets out a silent gasp.

She must have guessed my age,
but I rock the baby and carry on,
gently folding the blanket around him,
whispering while he yawns.

I pass a nosy couple,
who simply stare and frown,
as I shift the sleeping baby,
without even looking down.

I hear the couple talking,
as quietly as can be,
"Look at that young girl with that child,
what's gonna happen when he turns three?"

"She's barely old enough to care for herself,"
the couple continue to say,
"She should not be in charge of that child,
what's the world coming to today?"

I simple ignore their comments,
for I'm almost there,
and I pull the baby close to me,
run my fingers through his hair.

I see a building in the distance,
about a block to go,
so I lift me feet and carry on,
with the baby still in tow.

I gently kiss his forehead,
and a group of my peers smirk,
I cannot repeat the words they said,
as I continue on into the woodwork.

I approach the building's entrance,
turn the door knob with ease,
a young woman quickly approaches me,
and the baby she does seize.

She smothers him in kisses,
then says to me with a smile,
"Thank you for looking after my baby,
would you care to do it for the next little while?"

I smile and accept her offer,
then start the short trek back,
twenty dollars in my pocket,
my savings are right on track.

Don't judge people by what you see,
cause you might not always be right,
the people who look the strangest,
are usually the ones worth the fight.
