Sendin' my Girl to School ( a poem-song)

by david kessel   Dec 18, 2003

I met a pretty lady,
A woman of my dreams
I fell in love, all ready
To go to extremes

To gain her sweet affection
And win her tender love.
I feared her rejection
And begged the stars above:

"I'll be her faithful lover
And serve her all my life;
So, please use all your power
To make this girl my wife".

And then the stars replied:
"You need to ask her out;
And then, if you just tried
We'd help without a doubt."

And when again I met her,
My feelings I revealed,
And then she said: "You'd better
Keep up the way you feel

Because I 'm also questing
A loving man like you,
But your love I'll be testing
To see if it is true.

My number one condition:
I fancy a degree...
If you pay my tuition
I surely will agree

To be your faithful girfriend
And be your loving wife,
And love you till the very end
Of all your natural life".

And now...

I'm working, working, working,
Working like a mule.
I'm toiling, toiling, toiling
To send my girl to school.

I'm fishin' in Alaska
An' oilin' in Kuwait,
I'm milkin' in Nebraska,
To help her graduate.

Her GPA was low,
Her income was too high;
For student grants and loans
She wouldn't qualify.

I've paid her registration fee-
She is now my fiancee,
But she will only marry me
When she's got her BA.

So....

I'm working, working, working
Working like a mule.
I'm toiling, toiling, toiling
To send my girl to school.

I'm fishin' in Alaska
An' oilin' in Kuwait,
I'm milkin' in Nebraska
To help her graduate.

Two years have gone by and
My girl's got her AA;
For two more years I'm bound
To dog it night and day

To help her get her Bachelor's,
Buy books and pay her rent,
To pay for student councellors
I'll spend my last red cent...

And still...

I'm working, working, working,
Working like a mule.
I'm toiling, toiling, toiling
To send my girl to school.

I'm fishin' in Alaska
An' oilin' in Kuwait,
I'm milkin' in Nebraska
To help her graduate.

And after two more years
My girl got her BA,
And I looked in the mirror
And shuddered in dismay-

My hair was gone, and crow's feet
Appeared 'round my eyes...
What happens now when we meet?
"Surprise, my girl, surprise...

Cause..I've been...

Working, working, working,
Working like a mule.
Been toiling, toiling, toiling
To send you, girl, to school.

Been fishin' in Alaska
An' oilin' in Kuwait,
And milkin' in Nebraska
To help you graduate..."

And when I fin'lly met her
She didn't look so great-
She's gotten so much fatter
Than on that big first date,

But then it didn't matter-
Her dream has now come true
'Cause while she's grown fatter,
I 've lost my hair, too!

All because ...
I have...

Been working, working, working,
Working like a mule.
Been toiling, toiling, toiling
To send my girl to school.

Been fishin' in Alaska,
Been oilin' in Kuwait
An' milkin' in Nebraska
To help her graduate.

For thirty years now
We've been a man and wife,
And she fullfilled her vow
To love me all my life,

And I have learned that often
Committments must be earned
Hard vows must not soften
When true love is concerned

Just like in my case, right?
Cause I was....

Working, working, working,
Working like a mule
An' toiling, toiling, toiling,
To send my girl to school.

An' fishin' in Alaska,
An' oilin' in Kuwait,
An' milkin' in Nebraska
To help her graduate.
