Sweet Child of Mine

by Kevin McNulty   Dec 18, 2003

It's the one you've always dreamt of
Baby girl all of your own
To love and care for like a princess
Until you leave her home alone

Do you marvel at her features, tiny fingers, tiny toes?
Or do the other things concern you, smelly bum and runny nose?
Do you watch her lying upstairs, fast asleep within her cot?
Or do you wait on tenterhooks for the screams of your wide-awakened tot?

Will you wish her luck at first school to make friends once she's prepared?
Or will you send her inside crying, knowing that she's oh, so scared?
And will you watch her in the school play, as the lead in Cinderella?
Or will you laugh out when you find that she is just the story-teller?

Along will soon come her first boyfriend, will you welcome him inside?
Or will you send the 'waster' packing with a plane ticket to Port Said?
And how will you cope with all the mood swings as she becomes that feared teenager?
Will you pander to her orders, or will you, 'til she's 20, cage her?

Now that's almost all her growing up years, is it what you both expected?
Or have your future dreams been shattered, are you feeling now dejected?
Well just think how lucky that you are to have been looked upon and given
A babe so lovely and so precious, the perfect Xmas gift from Heaven

(Dedicated to all new parents over Xmas)

Aww so sweet and a lovely dedication. I have a one year old myself so the first stanza i can already relate to, and i'm sure the rest is yet to come. I really enjoyed this poem and the way you not only asked the questions but in different circumstances too. Well done, good job.
