The Last Pain

by Mishel   Nov 29, 2005

He was leaving her
She could see it in his eyes
Before he even said anything
She knew it was goodbye
She began to cry
And he didn't even look at her
He began to talk
And tell her things she didn't want to hear
She wanted to crawl into a hole
And just disappear
But she hung on
And listened to him talk
He said he was sorry
And started to walk away
She cried out for him
And told him to stay
She told him she needed him
And that she would die without him
But he just waved his hand
And didn't look back
As she crumbled to the ground
Her pain could be heard
All throughout the streets
And even though he couldn't see her anymore
He could still hear her scream
He wiped away a tear
As he walked in his house
The silence hurt his ears
He felt empty inside
As he thought about her
He wanted to drown out his memories with his tears
And stop the pain in his heart
He wanted to go back and pick her up
And hold her forever
He went into the kitchen
And saw his dad on the phone
He saw his face and knew something was wrong
He took a deep breath as the phone was put back on the receiver
He said "I'm sorry son.
But she got in an accident."
He couldn't believe it
It hadn't been that long
He turned around
Listening to his dad call after him
And he ran like hell back to her
A million thoughts pounded in his head
As he rounded the corner
He saw the lights
And it felt like his heart stopped
He saw two cars smashed up like trash
One straight into the other
But he saw something else
And he couldn't believe his eyes
There she was between the cars
Still breathing
Still holding on
He ran towards the scene
Tears streaming down his face
A police man stopped him
And said "I'm sorry but you can't go any further."
He said "That's my girlfriend,
I need to be with her."
The police man looked sad as he let him pass
As he made his way toward the cars
The medical team began to leave
They were shaking their heads
And whispering to each other
But his attention was on her
And her eyes as they locked on his
She tried to smile
But he knew it had to hurt
He started to apologize
And tell her how much he loved her
But she gathered her strength
And reached for his hand
He held it tight
And she pulled him closer
She whispered softly "I told you I couldn't live without you."
And with that she stopped breathing
The police man had to pull him away
Because he couldn't stop screaming
The police man had told him
That no one knew how this had happened
It seemed impossible to get hit like this
But he just looked at the ground
And cried his heart out
He knew she was right
He knew that she had died because of what he'd done
They had to carry him away
Because he refused to walk away from her again
But she was gone
And there was nothing he could do about it
The last pain he had ever caused
Was to the one girl who had ever truly loved him
