Her face was full of joy
her hair was the purest white
her face had endless wrickles
and she whispered
"no need to worry, I'm quite alright"
But in her heart
she felt differently
she knew her time
was about to come,
and she smiled a tiny smile
looking from me to my mom.
an old lady in her eighties
fearing the unknown
remembering past memories
what is now, from what was then.
Her bones were rather weak
weak from years of hard work
what was to come when she died?
what was going to lurk?
I took her small hands in mine
and said " grandma, i love you,
are you sure you will be okay?"
her face softened almost saddened
and she just looked away.
"Remember when
I first met your grandfather? remember what i said?"
"i remember how
you told me
that you liked
his friend instead"
the old woman threw her head back
and laughed a child like laugh
your grandfather wasn't a looker
but i knew him and i were meant to wed
i looked at grandmas smile
with this kind of glitter in her eyes
she was a sweet old lady
as sweet as all her apple pies.
"I know that its my time to go
to go to a farther place"
she wrapped her arms around me
and held me in her embrace.
"i know that i am going,
that i am going to soon die"
i look up into her face and thought
i was going to loose control and cry.
but then i heard my mothers voice
call to me and say " its time to go home daughter, visit grandma another day."
I looked at grandma one last time
and she softly whispered in my ear
the words of her life, the words she needed me to hear.
"When my heart stops beating
when i die tonight, tell your grandad not to worry, for i will be alright."
"tell him he was my whole life
he made me live out my every thrill,
tell him that i love him, i always did, i always will..."
