The Innocent

There in the classroom
On day one
She saw him over there
He watched her while having no fun

She saw him come over
He asked, Can I play?
And now and forever
They’re together every day

By fourth grade
They were best friends
Knowing their times
Would never have its ends

They saw each other all the time
Though with a twist and a twirl
His friends always teased him
For hanging out with a girl

She was there for him always
He thought her as carrying and sweet
No matter how hard things got
Her loyalty no one could beat

He came to her parties
Feelings for her hit him like a bomb
He was there for her sweet 16
And even took her to the prom

On the first dance
He didn't know what to say
She looked into his eyes
Fear then went away

It was so enchanting
They danced the whole night through
They wanted nothing more
Than to stay there; it was true

Deep in love they were
As they strolled through the park
Holding hands in silence
The stars shown brightly in the dark

He made a promise then
To never keep them apart
He then whispered in her ear
"No matter what, you'll always be in my heart"

She stared down at him
As he knelt to one knee
Joyful tears filled her eyes
He asked, "Will you marry me?"

The wedding was set
On a day in June
Their lives were beginning
All too soon

Then one rainy night
They rode home in the car
Having the greatest of times
A bright future wasn't far

But as they drove down the highway
Someone was racing through
She stared out the window scared
He didn't know what to do

A truck crashed on the right side
Pushed them in a ditch
She lay there; hurt so badly
Everything was at a switch

In the hospital
He stayed by her side
These were their last moments
Evil has turned the tide

He took her hand
And whispered, "I love you"
She smiled back at him saying
"I love you too"

With that final word...
And one final heartbeat...
She was gone forever
He froze in his seat

Her spirit took flight
He asked himself, why?
She looked down at him sadly
He solemly began to cry

Drinking and driving
Makes you no cooler or tougher
It only makes the innocent
Weep and suffer
