Stone Wings

by Dwight Towner   Dec 13, 2005

Ever since she was a young girl
She had dreams, Big dreams
Dreams of hope and wonder
Dreams of day and night
Dreams of spring and summer
Dreams maybe too wild for one
Those same dreams that came to haunt her...

See she was born with an infatic disease
Of the unknown
The doctors\' said they couldn\'t do anything for her
And in weeks or even days
She would be gone...

For this family death was the only option
After they lost their first two
The next plan was adoption...

Not promised another day
Not even another breath
Her parent\'s stood over her bed
Cherishing every moment they had left...

Her teary eyed dad opens her tiny hand
And inserts a small pair of stone wings
After loosing his other children
He expects the same thing...

As time went on that same sick baby
Was becoming a teen
A teen with even bigger dreams
Then on to better things...

Eleven years after her close call with death
She doesn\'t think about her illness much
She knows she\'s not well
But she still has one regret...

See the doctor that diagnosed her with the wrong analysis
And his false sense of living
Receives a package in the mail
Complete with a birth certificate
A letter
And a pair of stone wings...

The letter reads:
\"You tried to deprive me of years of my life and filled me and my family with pain, struggle and strife. My time on this earth may be very limited, but I think what I am about to say is way over due, but from my heart to yours I sincerely forgive you...

The stone wings become the albatross around the doctors neck
He feels a sense of sadness
But, for the girl more sympathy and respect
A sign of relief and no more neglect
He kneels down and begins to reflect...

He\'s never been proven wrong
But, the girl lived years after being diagnosed
So his false sense of pride is now gone...

A short month later she was back in the same hospital bed
On the same floor of the hospital
Back where it all started eleven years before...

See the world in a way is sorta like a house
With a down and an upstairs
This trip to the hospital would finally be her last
An hour later the girl had passed...

Her father placed the same pair of stone wings in her hand
Running his fingers through her hair
Holding back tears, pain, hurt, and despair
Knowing he\'s not loosing another child
He\'s just sending her upstairs...

At the funeral her parents look in the casket
But they don\'t see their daughter
They see a lifeless body
And a trace of the face that finally caught her...

She\'s ran too long
Now she\'s grown tired
Beating death and leaving others inspired...

As her father is leaving the gravesite
He starts thinking of memories and her dreams
He turns and walks back to the grave
Kisses the concrete angel atop the headstone
And on its\' back places the pair of stone wings...

She\'s fought her fight
Battled the pain and mental abuse
She now understands the meaning of the stone wings
Because to get upstairs you have to fly
And put them to use...
