A cut is still a cut....

by Nil   Dec 21, 2005

A cut is a cut
no matter what you call it
it still bleeds blood
and leaves a horrid scar
strawberry gashes or
red ribbons or
crimson regret
they are just other names
for someone
trying to release their pain
by slicing away their lives
with a razor or a knife
even a shard of glass
would work as a weapon
used for self harm

on their arms
or on their legs
the scars run like wires
always there when they look
serving as a reminder
of the mistakes they made
or the choices they chose
the people who had hurt them
the answers they won't know

whether the lines go across
or straight down like an arrow
you can't tell the level of pain
just cause someone slash sideways
doesn't mean they don't want to end life too
and just cause someone craves down
doesn't mean they aren't faking it like some do

other people form words
so they won't forget
writing loved ones names
or someone's they've never met
thinking it will help
ease the pain they feel
only to wake up and discover
that the scars are the only thing thats real

some even use it as art
a form misunderstood
people think it's sick and twisted
just because it involves blood

but no matter what name you give it
red wires and art alike
it's still all the same action
you're just bleeding away your life

(and you think it's only your pain)

A vivid portrayal of self harm, dramatic and deep. It is such strong imagery of one bleeding their life away and I like the comparisons because for the sufferer it must seem like art since creativity is a release of emotional energy in what ever format. Something I would not normally have read but a compelling read. Thank you for sharing Milly x

You are right - there are many ways of self harm to release pain. The depth or kind of cut doesn't matter, because either way it still cried red tears of "help me". I hope this habit is in your past, but I know that sometimes it is a habit that doesn't rest easily. :/

It comes back every now and then- Sometimes it's like a craving and I have to just try my best to not give in again
