What a Daddy Will Do

by Danielle   Dec 21, 2005

What a Daddy will do
Is rock his newborn daughter to sleep
And sigh when the morning peeks through the darkness of night
Another night of worry forever no more

He'll hold her hand as she takes those first steps
And smile gracefully with each stumble she just might make

He'll sit in chairs two sizes too small
And drink pretend tea
As she weaves tales of dragons he'll slay

What a Daddy will do
Is wake before dawn with a smile
Whispering words of pride
As she grumbles off to another early morning practice

He'll hold his head in pride
His eyes aglow
As she crosses the finish line ahead of the boys

He'll sit with her after everyone's gone to bed
Finishing homework that was meant to be done the day before
And smile as relief fills her eyes

What a Daddy will do
Is watch with overflowing pride as his daughter accepts her diploma
And silently pray for God to calm his fears
And get him through this day

He'll be full of conversation and happy to listen
When she calls home every now and then
Even if he has been asleep for hours on end

He'll smile through his fears
When she calls and says "I met a boy"
Knowing he won her heart years ago
And now he's got to learn to let go

What a Daddy will do. . .
Is love his daughter.
