A Wall

by david kessel   Dec 24, 2005

The wall,
A solid leaden hedge,
Meant to belligerence forestall
So they allege.

Sometimes
It's coarse but never kind:
No matter how high one climbs
It's end one cannot find.

Sometimes, it's apt
To be so soft and smooth,
In fluffy cotton wrapped
Rejection it can soothe.

A wall
Will never, ever change
Though you may push and storm,
In a phalange.

It won't budge.
It obdurately stands,
'Though strength you don't begrudge
With bloody hands,

Its realm
You simply cannot gain.
The wall will always overwhelm
You, even though you strain
Yourself to enter the domain,
It all results in pain.

The wall will just remain
A lonely seeker's bane.
Your efforts are in vain,
And if you think you can
Become the only man
Who walks inside its span,
You are insane.
