Happy birthday Dad
You have lived one more year
Today marks another day
That you were not here

There is no cake,
Balloons, or cheer
Just for once I wish
You were actually here

Presents lay unopened,
Cards from friends and family dear
Gathering dust
Waiting for you here

Messages on the phone
Recorded loud and clear
Awaiting patiently
For you to return here

Happy Birthday Dad
Today is no different from years past
Promised to come home more
A promise which never lasts
