Have To Cry

by Poetvoices   Jan 18, 2006

I know it's instinct,
but it's not fair
Why'd they take you
while you were there?

You said, "Don't worry.
I'm coming back.
I'll write as much as I can."
And then you went off to Iraq.

I prayed for you every day.
"Please let him call them home!"
You'd write as often as possible
from wherever it was you'd roamed.

Then, I hadn't heard from you in 5 months.
I wondered what'd happened. I got scared.
My fears were proved right when I got the letter.
For hours, down to it was where I stared.

Not a tear, at the time, I shed.
I tried to be so strong.
You were Missing In Action.
This HAD to be wrong.

Later they told me
that the enemy'd captured you.
They used you to make a point and then they were through.

Sometimes, I still don't believe it,
no matter how they try
to tell me that it's true.
Now that I can, I just have to cry.
