The Imposter (Ghazal)

by Amanda Bee   Jan 21, 2006

Identical eyes and mouth, all in order to betray, but I know that he's an imposter
Identical nose and lips, even the way his hips sway, yet I can tell he's an imposter

Professing to be the owner of my heart, yet he speaks with malice and spite
Oh no, my love would never treat me that way, but this man he's an imposter

Wearing his clothes and answering to his name, I watch him as he sleeps
The rise and fall of his chest...they even breathe the same way, but he's an imposter

How familiar this stranger seems, outwardly indistinguishable in every way
But then I look into his eyes, I see what they convey, and I know that he's an imposter

I must not allow myself to be deceived by him, so for now I will patiently wait
For my beloved to come back to me and send this one away, for surely he's an imposter

Ghazal: A poem form where the stanzas are comprised of couplets which share a rhyme and a refrain. Ghazal is pronounced "Ghuzzle" and in Arabic literally means "Speaking with women." The 2nd line of each couplet in a Ghazal ends with the repitition of a refrain of one or a few words. The 1st couplet will introduce the theme, both lines will end with rhyme and refrain (AA, BA, CA etc.). All couplets, each line of each couplet must all share the same meter. Usually the Ghazal consists of no more then a dozen couplets.

Intresting poem. I would like to think that when people do something mean that they are an imposter, too.

I love the way you hide the message behind the words in this poem. And the way you expressed how the guy you love has changed - it's remarkable! I voted a 5, keep it up! =)
