Best Loves-Lost Loves

by david kessel   Jan 13, 2004

( The poem below is humor- do not take it seriously).

Of all the great loves that I have been through,
The best are the ones that did *not* come true,
For in my old heart they forever live
And their warmth to me they forever give.

In my dreams the women I love are young,
And my heart is full of songs unsung,
And my head is filled with endless hope
Which includes some crazy plan to elope:

Such as: \"If your parents oppose our plans,
We will still elope in a brand-new Benz...\"
But each time the love would require a feat
I would not continue but would simply quit...

Anyway, silly things that I thought I\'d do
I just never did so, it was \"adieu\"
\'Cause I just gave up- didn\'t pay the price
To win loves which needed my sacrifice...

Twenty years have just gone by and now,
All my friends have a wife that resembles a c-w,
While at home alone I consume my chow,
And do I regret it? No way, No how!

In my past I live where slim young ladies
I parade around in my Mercedes-
Some are one-night-stands and some are steadies
(Not divorced with kids cause I ain\'t no Brady).

But my friends have fam\'lies with screaming tiddlers,
And their business partners are scheming diddlers,
And their wives are no longer as attractive
As when they were tender and young and active.

And they toil away and have no savings
For they need to feed their family\'s cravings.
They are fat and bald and look mighty tired
While I\'m getting ready to be retired...

As the newness of all their loves wore off,
They became just feeders for the family trough,
But I live in starry and wondrous trances
Riding crests of passions of past romances...

\'Cause the loves that did not result in a wedding,
In a good direction were lastly heading-
They became inspirations for later years
And not heavy debts to be paid in arrears...

You are most welcome- I am surprised that it is a female person who actually appreciated a poem that was kind of intended to encourage middle-aged men :). And yes, I will continue writing. That's for sure.
