The Mermaid

by Bradley Peter   Feb 13, 2006

Sweeping through the jungle
pushing passed the trees
he was searching for a myth
that swam across the seas

it was a cool dark night
and the moon lite the sky
the stars shone brightly
as something caught his eye

across the motionless lake
in the distance he could see
she was there upon a rock
as he whispered 'it can't be'

in disbelief he rubbed his eyes
then rubbed them once more
but still she sat there happily
just yards away from shore

as he gazed upon her beauty
she suddenly began to sing
but still she sat motionless
as he began to swing

her voice echoed the jungle
it was innocent and pure
her words were filled with sadness
which made her insecure

after she had stopped singing
he asked her for her name
she then quickly span around
as if someone pointing blame

he repeated the question again
as she looked still in shock
"i am Santinia" she replied
"whom sits upon this rock"

he felt feelings of love
and so imparted them to her
her soft voice replied
"please prove it gentle sir"

"swim across this lake
and hold me in you arms
prove to me your love
and woo me with your charms"

"for i cannot swim to you
as part of a curse that is placed
but i warn you good sir
there is great danger to be faced"

"you're not the first to try
this is a great favor that i ask
many have lost their lives
trying to complete this fatal task"

the man enthused with love
quickly jumped into the lake
and half way to the creature
realized he's stupid mistake

and just like all the others
he was drowned by the spell
leaving the lonely mermaid
to again sadly dwell

she was sadly never loved
but always lusted for
an object of male affection
for her to always adore

You have described the imaginary so well.
It sounded so real like one for once I felt I was watching a short movie, like it was happening infront of me.
I wish for once in life I get a chance to see a mermaid.

God, I used to love reading pieces like this, I did not realize how much I missed these sort of pieces. I love the description and the story. I love the word choice and how the length wasn't as horrible as it seems just by looking at it. Nice piece. Good job. I like it

    Love,

OH MY GOSH! I LOVED this! I love mermaids, haha. amazing flow, great story and description. only thing i noticed was,

    "realized he's stupid mistake"
is "he's" supposed to be "his"?

i'm adding this to my favorites! 5/5
