The Sunset's Tones (Pantoum)

by Timeless Hopeful   Feb 16, 2006

Orange meets the blue
The sunset’s colorful mixture I adore
Its aspects of beauty are like the many droplets of dew
It reminds me of my necklace made of peacock ore

The sunset’s color I adore
From its tones of orange mixed with purplish blue
It reminds me of my necklace made of peacock’s ore
Its emulsions of colors accrues

From its tones of orange mixed with purplish blue
How does such a thing mix?
Its emulsions of colors accrues
As it dies down to cold goddess Nyx

How does such a thing mix?
Is deciphering the yang from the ying
As it dies down to cold goddess Nyx
Naked on her chariot her black cloth is all she could bring.

**The pantoum consists of a series of quatrains rhyming ABAB in which the second and fourth lines of a quatrain recur as the first and third lines in the succeeding quatrain; each quatrain introduces a new second rhyme as BCBC, CDCD. The first line of the series recurs as the last line of the closing quatrain, and third line of the poem recurs as the second line of the closing quatrain, rhyming ZAZA.

The design is simple:

Line 1
Line 2
Line 3
Line 4

Line 5 (repeat of line 2)
Line 6
Line 7 (repeat of line 4)
Line 8**

Do you have to completely repeat the line, since the first line of the second stanza isn't exactly the second from the first... woah that sounded more confusing than I had hoped for.

I really enjoyed the imagery in the poem, and I liked the type of poem; I don't know how it slipped by me. I find it much more agreeable than a villanelle, though it reminds me a bit of one.
