My Mema

by Sierra   Feb 17, 2006

Seven days before I turned fifteen
My best friend wound up in the hospital
Severe pains all over her stomach
Her doctors put her on morphine
They ran tests, tested her blood
Found nothing
Until that one night
They opened her intestines
What they found was my worse nightmare
There were spots everywhere
It was too late
Stage Four
They gave her six months
Before this atrocious disease would take her life

She kept a smile on her face
She visited her grandchildren
Hugged her sons
Planned the family's future
with my Mother.
She wasn't frightened
She was willing to fight
Chemotherapy, radiation
She wanted to do it for her family's sake.

Fifteen days later
Her intestines were paralyzed
The disease had taken over
Her body couldn't digest anymore
Everything shut down
Her stomach swelled
There was no hope.
She told us, I want this to be fast.
The doctors gave her ten days to live
The pain had become so severe
They tripled her morphine dose
She could no longer communicate.

I never got to say goodbye
All I got to see was her body
Half alive, leaving the world
She told me I had nice shoes
And she told me to let the dogs inside.
Then she went back to sleep.
That was the last time I saw her.
Her eyes were glistening blue
Shiny and bright
As she lay in that bed
Making her way into the Gates of Heaven.
