A bad day for the inventors of the English Language

The people who invented our words
are often considered clever and smart.
I think they must definitely have been nerds
to invent a whole language from the start.
But even these people had a bad day
when thinking up some of the stuff that we say.
They forgot a few things but overall were happy
leaving some mistakes that make their work scrappy.

They must have thought it funny indeed
to take the word read and say it like reed.
Then funnier still they thought when they said
take the word read and pronounce it like red.
And to complete their great, funny joke
one of these inventors stood up and he spoke:
We should spell them both exactly the same
chuckling loud as if merely a game.

Maybe they thought of the things they wrote
mistakes were few and no one would note
that the word read can be read to sound like deed.
Nor will we be confused
when we read the word read and pronounce it like dead.
Could it have been that one day before
they used reed and red and now needed more
and since there is no time like the present
they decided it was time to present their present.

No one would notice how each word was spelt
One of them, tired, said that he felt
So they didnt consider something new
And quickly invented the three words two, too, and to

These inventors were most certainly lame
To invent a language so verbally insane.
And next time you notice your nose is runny
or someone says your feet smell funny.
Let these feet that smell take you on a trip
Remembering the men who invented our words
But dont think too hard or you may trip
and think to yourself, they must have been nerds.
